Wombats Dubai Super League 2016 – 17.
29th October 2016
Atif Butt (Yellows) and Nauman (TCC) walked out for the toss at 7:45 am on 29th Oct’16 desperate to gain some valuable points with both teams sitting deep on the points table with only a solitary win each.
TCC won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a firm batting strip but with some overnight dew. Yellows wanted to bowl first as they expected batting to become easier as the field dried out.
TCC started off in characteristic fashion and positive intent reaching 40 in 4 overs before Atif Butt struck by removing both the openers and put some breaks on.
Hasnad got the gritty Mohd Owais top edged to the keeper. Naqi Shah beat the defenses in his first over followed by Masam running to square leg to grab a catch of his own bowling to make it 76/5. Naqi shah got his 2nd victim clean bowled to hand a firm grip to the Yellows with the score at 83/5. In walked the dangerous Abir Chippa but found it hard to middle the ball through his stay, Abir got 3 let off’s and put TCC back in control at 160/6. The ever explosive Munad Akbari got both Mumtaz and Abir in the same over to peg TCC back. A late gush by Ahmed Malik and some tight bowling towards the end by Krish held TCC at 198/8
With a huge score to chase down, and Vikas lost in the 2nd over of the innings things did not look pretty. Yasir Jamil (back after a fractured finger) and Masam Malik took the attack straight back to TCC with some lusty blows across the ground to re-emerge from 11/1 in 2 overs to 79/1 in 9. Yasir Jamil continued to dictate terms while he lost another partner at 125/3 and eventually 130/4
A delicate situation and Munad Akbari at the crease can get any captain to bite his nails off, Munad got the required rate back to 6.5 but fell in the process and Yelllows now needed 46 in 40 balls with Munazzar and Atif in the middle. A no risk policy saw them through the jitters before Munazzar fell with 25 needed of 20.
With the Wombats camp growing in number and noise. anxiety levels reaching high and a similar sight of a screaming Haroon Ghaus of “CMON !!!!” TCC played their trump card and got Abir to bowl the death overs with 20 needed of 18, and with a magnificent over conceding only 2 in the over. 18 needed off 12, Hasnad making his intention clear to the captain “i’m gona blast anything in my zone” and blast he did – first ball of the 24th over, hard and high over deep mid wicket for 6 !!. Singles followed, 7 needed of 6 and Abir to bowl the decider. A dot and 3 runs of a bye brought it down to 4 in 4, followed by 2 dot balls consumed by Atif.
20+ Wombats suggesting and screaming in the soaring heat – Go for Hit said one!, Play it through covers opined Sherry, Sq leg is deep screamed another.
The ball was cut through covers and a misfield by Mumtaz resulted in a two and left Abir fuming over the fielders. It all came down to 2 in 1. A stroke to extra cover and sprint by the batsmen like their life depended on it to launch a warcry of 25 jubilant team members into the field like they just lifted the world cup will stay etched in our memories for long, reminding us of the penultimate ball 6 by Adeel Safvi against the same team a month ago.
More importantly, 2 points gained and a week full of how we strategically overcame this challenge and what we learn will follow.
