Wombats – King of Dubai Super League

Dubai Super League Fifth Edition, the largest amateur level cricket league in Dubai, involving 16 teams, and approx. 500 players, started with much excitement in September 2017 and came to a grand conclusion on 20 Apr 2018. The league comprised of 184 matches, with each participating team playing each other once in Round 1 and then split into 2 separate leagues – “Elite” comprising the top 8 teams competing for the coveted “DSL Cup” and “Premier” comprising of the other 8 Teams competing for the “DSL Shield”.

The grand finale for the Elite League saw Wombats Blacks (Runners Up in DSL 4th edition) taking on Salman Cool Boyz (who were Shield Winners last year and who had defeated Titans CC, the Defending Champions of DSL). Wombats Blacks scored a mammoth 192 runs off their allotted 25 overs with contributions from Tauseef Qadri (79 runs off 59 balls) and Ram Narayan (46 runs off 41 balls) with M Hassan & Naveed Wajaz taking 2 wickets apiece and then bundled out Salman Cool Boyz for 148 runs in 22 overs, registering a comfortable victory to lift the DSL Cup for the first time. Abid Nini was the chief wrecker for Wombats Blacks returning figures of 5-0-29-3 and was ably supported by Adnan Qaiser who had returns of 5-0-41-2. Muhammad Rumman with a score of 34 runs was the highest scorer for Cool Boyz.

The finals of the Premier league involved Wombats Reds taking on Dubai Exiles and posting a fighting total of 160 runs off their allotted 25 overs and hold their nerves to win the match by 4 runs in a game which went down to the last ball. Rahul Soni, the wicket keeper batsman, scored a quick fire 40 runs off 23 balls to set the platform for Wombats Reds; Danysh Hyder , Khurram Ali and Faiz Hussain took 2 wkts apiece for Dubai Exiles. Defending 160, Wombats Reds opening bowlers Faraz and Krish applied a stranglehold restricting Dubai Exiles to 32 runs in the first 10 overs for 4 wkts which included 2 run outs. The Dubai Exiles team, however, manager to wrest control of the game and the pair of Danysh hyder & Imran khan set about rebuilding the innings before another run out saw Danysh perish and was followed  soon by Imran Khan, his wkt being taken by the Reds Captain Ghanim. The match headed to a tight finish but the Reds managed to clinch the nail biter and claim the DSL Shield.

The fifth edition of DSL saw nearly 61,000 runs being scored, 2,586 wkts being taken over 184 matches. The league is hosted by Wombats Cricket Club.
