Cricket – Wombats Dubai Super League
9th November 2017
On a bright, sunny, early November afternoon, perfect for playing cricket in Dubai, Wombats Blacks took on Salman Cool Boys in the Dubai Super League. However, whilst the conditions might have been perfect for playing cricket, it was less than perfect for Wombats Blacks with only 9 players turning up for the match. Nevertheless, as they say, the ‘the show must go on’.
Blacks won the toss and without hesitation, elected to bat (in the hope that 2 players would miraculously come to the rescue… it wasn’t to be). But boy did the show go on! Opener, Tauseef Qadri brought up his 3rd century of the DSL in emphatic style in a just 63 balls. All 11 of Salman Cool Boys players, the 2 umpires and the remaining 8 of Wombats Blacks were treated to yet another masterclass by the right hander. This was a different kind of innings, calm, contained aggression. He only struck four boundaries. However, he launched four huge sixes, two of them pulled over the square leg boundaries. Haroon Ghaus, as is often the case, played an aggressive unbeaten knock of 45 off 31 balls powering Wombats Blacks towards a big total. If that wasn’t enough, Aashir Hasnain smacked 31 runs in a mere 11 balls, in his typical audacious fashion. The onslaught brought Wombats Blacks total to 219.
However, 219 might be a mammoth total if you have 11 on the pitch. With just 9, that appeared to be a par score. The Blacks opening bowlers went about their bowling plans diligently, executing their skills with gaping holes in the field. However, key early wickets of Rumman, last years leading run scorer in DSL (caught to a beauty of a catch by Adnan) and Rizwan meant that the Cool Boys plans of chasing the total down were dampened. Raheel and Nauman built up a respectable partnership to keep their side in the hunt making a valuable 66 runs and 35 runs respectively. However, once the in form off spinner, Jason Stewart removed Nauman, the game was pretty much in the bag for the Blacks. Talha with his second 3fer ensured that blacks get the valuable bonus point. No one would have predicted that the game would end with Wombats Blacks winning by 49 runs and securing the bonus point as Cool Boys were all out for 170.
What a show! Wombats Blacks remains undefeated so far in this edition of Aqua Properties DSL.
